A detailed record of England

We have a detailed record of over 13,000 towns and villages across England from the Domesday Book.  These records tell us a lot about the new Norman England.

A 'sheep' from
the Bayeux Tapestry

All the information was written down by a single monk.  He had to copy all the information onto parchment.

This was thick paper made from sheep's skins.  The final book was so long that around 1,000 sheep would have been used!

However, King William never saw the finished book.  He died while fighting in France in summer 1087.
